CHAPTER SEVENTEEN

“Ernie, I need you here. I think that I could make it very worthwhile for you to come out here and be my right-hand guy,” I said.

“Bill, I appreciate it, but my family’s in New Jersey. My kids are still in New Jersey, and I don’t want to leave just now,” Ernie said.

“I feel like all I do is deal with lawyers. And the lawyers that I deal with, I just can’t trust,” I said. It was true. I felt overwhelmed by the mounting problems I had with the IRS, the SEC, Peter’s brother Harold, and dealing with the local planning board officials in Santa Clarita. I had wanted to get away from practicing law and do something else with my life. Now I was a full-time client. I was caught up in the same legal system that I used to work in, but then I was the one calmly handing out advice which would affect people’s lives, now I was the one trying to extricate myself from the quagmire.

“I do appreciate the fact that your family is on the East Coast,” I said. “I would fly you back at least one week a month so you can see them.”

“I was not the best father when my kids were growing up. When I got divorced, I felt the gap between us widened. Now that they’re about to enter college, I feel at can at least talk to my kids for the first time. They used to be so angry at me for leaving their mom. Things aren’t great, but at least I feel that they don’t hate me for the first time in a long time.”

“Maybe you should ask them if they want to come to California and live with you,” I said. “They could go to college out here.”

“Their mother would kill me first,” Ernie laughed.

I knew that it was hopeless. I never had a large circle of friends back in New Jersey, but the ones I had, I could count on. Now I was on the West Coast, separated by a continent from people I trusted. I wanted to bring those people into my new world so that I could gain some comfort simply from their presence. I knew it was selfish, but I thought that I could cushion the inconvenience on people like Ernie by paying a hefty salary.

Now that we were in California and living near our children, the frequency that we saw them had increased, but they had their own lives. Tommy’s movie was completed, and he was onto another project. He also was dealing with postproduction issues while getting his new project into pre-production. Caitlin was beginning to complain that she never saw him.

We had taken Bobby living with us for granted, but now that he was in LA, he was caught up in his own work. Bobby found a place of his own closer to the studio where he was doing postproduction work on his movie. Morgan was doing well at school, having gotten a boost in popularity from Little Di.
